9/11 Boatlift, narrated by Tom Hanks

Tom Hanks narrates the Story of the Largest Boatlift in History

12-Minute Short Documentary

On September 11, 2001, at the direction of the Coast Guard, a group of everyday citizens worked together to accomplish the largest sea evacuation in history. Half a million people were transported in a stretch of nine hours. It was a monumental feat that eclipsed the 339,000 soldiers that were evacuated from Dunkirk during World War II over a span of nine days.

The National Coast Guard Museum Association recently held a virtual event entitled Stories That Matter – 15th Anniversary: The Coast Guard Response to Katrina featuring ADM Thad Allen, USCG (Ret.), CAPT Bruce Jones, USCG (Ret.) and Scott Cooper of Crescent Towing, hosted by Chief Petty Officer Phil Null, of the They Had to Go Out podcast. We’re excited to share the recording of this event with you. Please click the preview above to watch and share with your friends and colleagues.

Our panelists shared incredible stories of response and recovery efforts in New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina, a devastating storm after which the Coast Guard rescued more than 33,500 people. From daring helicopter rescues in the dead of night, to utilizing barges as triage stations, these stories demonstrated the leadership, bravery, innovation and heroism of the men and women of the Coast Guard and its partners.

Subj:  MYCG – MODERNIZING COAST GUARD ORGANIZATIONAL COMMUNICATIONS

1.  Admiral Charles Ray, Vice Commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard, recently issued the following email to all hands of the Coast Guard workforce:

From: Ray, Charles W ADM

Sent: Wednesday, August 26, 2020 10:17 AM

Subject:  MYCG – MODERNIZING COAST GUARD ORGANIZATIONAL COMMUNICATIONS

To the Women and Men of the U.S. Coast Guard,

It is my pleasure to announce the Coast Guard’s launch of MyCG, a new website created by Coasties, for Coasties.

MyCG is a one-stop information gateway – on the public web – that brings together essential Coast Guard news and resources to give you easier access to the important information you need. It is available anytime, anywhere, with updates and resources to support you and your family.

MyCG is an essential tool for sustaining a mission-ready total workforce. When we announce a new personnel policy, you can go to MyCG to learn exactly how it will affect you. As you strive to advance your career and become a better leader, click on MyCG to find the information and resources you need. When you want to connect with an affinity group, or save up for your dream home, visit MyCG. We’ve got a section for that too.

A modern workforce deserves a modern approach to communicating. For the past year, a small team – comprised of officers, enlisted, spouses, reservists, retirees, and civilians – has been building a better system to ensure our people get the information they need. The MyCG website is just the start. In the coming months, we’ll continue to upgrade our approach to organizational communications. As we move ahead, MyCG will expand with more functionality, more news, more resources, and more voices.

You can access MyCG at https://www.work.uscg.mil/MyCG/. The “About” tab includes a Quick Guide for saving the site to your mobile device home screen, where it will function just like an app. Please take a moment to tell us what YOU would like to see on MyCG – you can email the team at MyCG@uscg.mil. We’re committed to making sure you can easily find the news and resources you need to succeed and ensure we remain ready, relevant, and responsive.

Semper Paratus!

Admiral Charles W. Ray

Vice Commandant

2.  All Auxiliarists are encouraged to frequently visit this new MyCG site. The site is currently designed for Auxiliarists to learn more about the Coast Guard much more so than it is for them to learn about the Auxiliary. As Admiral Ray indicated, in the coming months the site’s approach to organizational communications will be upgraded with more functionality, resources, and voices. In the meantime, it provides a new and attractive one-stop source for Coast Guard information for all members of the Coast Guard.

3. Internet release is authorized.

B. Civilian Awards Manual, COMDTINST M12451.1 (series)

1. The Coronavirus pandemic has had significant negative impacts on Coast Guard recruiting efforts, with cascading impacts on workforce strength, and we need the total workforce’s help recruiting our future service members. The Coast Guard Recruiting Command (CG RC) is calling on all active duty and reserve members, civilian employees, Auxiliarists, and retirees to assist in increasing enlisted and officer accessions for both the active duty and reserve.

2. To encourage support of our efforts to recruit new members in critical areas described below, the Personnel Service Center has revised the Everyone Is A Recruiter (EIAR) Incentive Program (REF (A)). This program recognizes those who have supported recruiting efforts through the use of formal and informal awards, which may include: the Commandant’s Letter of Commendation Ribbon, Auxiliary Letter of Commendation Ribbon, 72 hours of special liberty, recognition in the Reservist Magazine, Official Letter of Commendation for CG civilians and a Time Off Award per REF B, thank you letters, and unit coins from CGRC. Since 2017, 223 LOC’s have been awarded and 58 72-hour special liberty passes were given through the EIAR Incentive Program.

3. Critical recruiting mission areas through 30 Sep 2021 are:

a. Active Duty (AD) enlisted: all accessions

b. Reserve enlisted: all new accessions (non prior-CG) and active duty members accessing directly to the CG Reserve.

c. Officer: new accessions (non prior-CG) through:

(1) College Student Pre-commissioning Initiative (CSPI)

(2) Direct Commission Aviator

(3) Direct Commission Engineer

(4) Direct Commission Lawyer (AD or SELRES)

(5) Direct Commission Physician’s Assistant (AD or SELRES)

4. Specific information on program details, resources, requirements, and the referral and award process can be found in REF (A), posted at: https://cg.portal.uscg.mil/units/psc/Lists/PSC%20Instructions/AllItems.aspx.

5. For additional program information, contact YNCS Mary Endicott of CG RC Mission Support at (202) 795-6879 or HQS-SMB-CGRC-GOCOASTGUARD-Chat-Team. New Life Jacket Label Infographic

How to Read the Label

Did you know there is a new life-jacket label? The label is being phased in, and you may see it printed on the inside of a new life jacket. The new label DOES NOT make obsolete life jackets with the old label. Always look for a life jacket that is U.S. Coast Guard approved.

Remember, the best life jacket is one you wear! Your life jacket should be appropriate for water activity and in good condition. Life jackets with a tear, broken pieces or buoyancy loss should be disposed.

Download our latest infographic to learn how to read the new life jacket label and visit safeboatingcampaign.com/life-jackets for more information.

Life Jacket Label Flyer

This educational flyer is helpful for communicating with recreational boaters about selecting (and wearing) a life jacket. It gives an overview of icons on the new life jacket label – performance level, turn ability, and warnings – as well as other helpful information.

These front-back flyers are full-color, 3.5″ x 8.5″, and ship in a pack of 200. This is a great handout for events, trainings, and vessel safety checks. Estimated to ship by September 1.
